Classic Literature and Composition Tuesdays 9 am Central
Interest through 12th Grade Sept- May
What will we cover in this class:
The literature covered in this class will allow the student an opportunity to "step into the shoes" of the characters who will fascinate the reader, with themes that will promote amazing discussions in our LIVE online class format. We will cover literary movements and works that impacted literature to this day in a timeless way. We will also cover Writing elements with every class. Our literature excerpts shared in class and in homework emails will make excellent content for terrific writing opportunities.
Literary elements and devices will be taught and discussed each week.
Composition, Essay, Journaling, Character Analysis, Plot Diagrams, Theme Charts, Q&A, Research Papers, and Author Biography Sketches are just some of the assignment choices your student will be offered … and that makes it a great class for your English credit needs this year with Literature and Composition skills being covered in every class.
The books can be varied by age group so this class can span several grade needs in one family.
Grading and Credit:
Grading and credit awarded is at the final discretion of the parent, so I am flexible with assignments and will work with your family to meet your goals and needs as much as possible. This class is eligible for one credit for the entire year of study. Semester Grading and Certificates are included this year for this one tuition fee.
What You Will Need:
You will need a computer but online classes can often be taken by hand-held devices. Students are not required to have or use a webcam or microphone, although they will be given opportunities to use them throughout the course to make presentations. The classes are LIVE each week with the teacher on mic and/or webcam. The class is similar to a traditional class environment, but online the students will discuss as the teacher directs in a chat box within the classroom, will learn and share by webcam or mic, will see and make powerpoint or pdf presentations of assignments, and will get to do all of this from the comfort of their own home!
Types of Classics that will be covered through this course through studies and excerpts to study literary elements and style as well as literary movements throughout history:
Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Emmuska Orczy
+ Other Short Stories and Poetry as well as...
Dickens, The Bronte Sisters, Jane Austen, Shakespeare and C.S. Lewis will also be featured authors as well as Christian Classic authors both old and new (20th Century authors like C.S. Lewis and AW Tozer)
***Please note: The Literary Works covered in their entirety will be decided as the class is formed for this year and is depending on the needs of the class. We will work with our families to make a plan that works for your student and credit needs.
Students are allowed at the discretion of the parent to choose a version of each book that works for their reading and interest skill level. Students also may enjoy audio versions of the books, and at times a movie or play may be an appropriate and/or best way to enjoy the classic work.
